ENSURE THEY ARE SAFE FOR A MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR!

You do not have to run after them, here and there. YOU DO NOT have to threaten them by pridicting misfortunes if they don't listen to your caution. YOU DO NOT even have to please them by thinking your words of guidance will disrupt thier peace and affect thier Christmas.

BUT have some time with them,

Be a father, be a mother, be an aunt, be a sister, be a brother, be a grandi and be A FRIEND. create a platfoam for dialogue, establish a forum with them and relaese that wisdom from your brain to thiers. They will built perimeter walls in thier heart. they will guide thier foot steps, they will look after each other and THEY WILL TAKE CARE OF THEMSELVES. YOU DONT WANT TO MISS CELEBRATING THIS. They don't need alot BUT A LITTLE BIT OF LOVE AND UNDERSTANDING! THE TEENS ARE GOOD, NOT THE WAY YOU THINK!

THANKS for taking care of them, breading them, sheltering them, providing medical care, educating them, protecting them and above all FORGIVING THEM IN ALL THEY DID, WHICH WAS NOT PLEASING TO YOU. IF YOU HAVE NOT FORGIVEN ANY, please! please! it is not too late, allow blessings to follow him/her in the comming 2012 by releasing him/her from your heart. AND IF YOU DO THAT, PLEASE let him or her know it, and let him or her know how he can not do that again! I LOVE THE TEENS!

THE STEROTYPES. THe teens speak out!

Sadhia Khan, 17
A-LEVEL STUDENT FROM NORWOOD GREEN, MIDDLESEX
"It's very unfair to group teenagers as 'problematic' for society. Most of us just aren't like that. I have so many extra-curricular hobbies; I have been in a debating society, I play tennis and badminton and the piano. I don't tend to meet my friends on the street but go shopping with them or meet for meals. The media's image of teenagers and these negative reports that have recently been published tend to focus on the idea that young people misbehave and just hang around doing nothing. That's not true for many of us. We have a lot of pressures in our lives, socially and academically. I've applied to do medicine at university like my sister, and many of us are hoping to achieve in life and make a positive impact in society, yet that is an image that rarely comes across in debates on teenage life. My group of friends is highly motivated. Every time I pick up a newspaper or hear another TV report about teenagers, it is always demonising us, rather than reflecting the reality for most of us. At the end of a schoolday, when we sometimes go shopping together, we're looked at suspiciously because we are taking up so much space. People are quite judgmental about teenagers, how we look, where we go, and I think it's a shame that middle-class children are treated with more respect than maybe someone who's wearing a hoodie."

JUSTIN BIEBER-A TEENAGER WHO INSPIRES THE TEENS

Ed Chapman, 17
A-LEVEL STUDENT FROM NORTH LONDON
"The majority of teenagers are fairly well behaved, and I don't believe there's a higher percentage of teenagers causing trouble than adults, so it is not specifically a teenager problem. Young people are a visible target because for many, their only option is to meet outside the home. I spend time regularly hanging around the estate because that is how we socialise - we can't really have so many friends round to the house - but we don't cause any trouble and we have a good relationship with the residents. The police stop us fairly regularly which I find irritating. Two of my friends were stopped and searched by an officer who was rude and aggressive when they were doing nothing wrong. I have been stopped and searched twice and asked questions four or five times. I'm a Scout leader and help to look after around 50 kids every week, and am responsible for taking them on camps. I plan to go to university and become a barrister."
Jennifer Whitfield, 14
PUPIL AT NORTHALLERTON COLLEGE, NORTH YORKSHIRE
"The perception that people have of all teenagers as troublemakers annoys me. It's just a small section of young people that are out to cause trouble. When I'm shopping with friends, I notice that we're followed around by a shop assistant who stays behind us at all times as if we are going to do something wrong. Of course, there are teenagers who spend time hanging around on street corners but they are not all trying to scare adults, just trying to have a good time with their friends, and they have nowhere else to gather. People tend to assume they are causing trouble when they are actually just standing there. It's wrong to judge teenagers, who in the majority, are not out to harm others but just to have fun. Sometimes I'll go to the park with friends but not often. Most of the time, I play netball and the saxophone in the concert band at college, or go camping with my family in holidays but not everyone can afford to do these things, so maybe that's why some stand on the street, to meet and chat."

Helena Gavrielides, 16
A-LEVEL STUDENT FROM LONDON
"There are so many teenagers who are good citizens. Most teenagers do drink but it depends where they do it. I think it's silly to drink standing on a street, and I understand that can be intimidating for adults. But it's difficult because not everyone's doing this, although people are going to pick up on the worst cases. I go to a liberal comprehensive school. The younger children meet on the street and I've seen police asking them to move although they were not doing anything. Elderly people seem suspicious of young people, even when we are polite, as if they assume we are going to steal their bags.
I've got friends who do charity work so it's not all about us drinking, and drugs and partying. I am busy every night except one with yoga, choir and piano and I've just taken a course to qualify as a swim instructor. With reports on obese teenagers, a lot of young people are really stressed about being overweight. I see so many girls on diets, and I don't think reports on obesity do anything to help their self image."

GULU WINS NATIONAL SCHOOLS DEBATE CHAMPIONSHIP

Sacred Heart S.S Gulu have been crowned the 2011 national schools debate champions following their victory over Mengo .S.S in a thrilling emotional debate finale held in the Parliament Conference Hall on Friday December 9.
The only Girls school to reach the finals for the first time in the history of the debate championships, three students from Sacred Heart passionately defended the role of the United Nations in ensuring observance of civil liberties across the world.

The Deputy Speaker of Parliament Hon. Jacob Oulanyah who crowned the debate champions warned the National Debate Council against misguiding the youth to fulfill the agenda of other parties.

“Some of the donors have an agenda of their own. Do not allow them to use the youth as guinea pigs”, Hon.Oulanyah warned.

He told delegates to the debate finale that the unlimited potential of the youths should be harnessed.

“Iam glad Parliament and the National Debate Council have provided a platform where the youth can be inspired. I pledge to support this initiative”, the Speaker confirmed to delegates.

Rt.Hon.Jacob Oulanyah alongside MPs Hanifah Kawooya, Mike Sebalu, Ababiku Jesicca,Karuhanga Gerald, Hood Katuramu,Tinkasimire Barnabas among others faced off with the students in a debate over the role of political party caucuses in eroding the right of speech for legislators.

The students sourced from over 37 schools across the country argued that the party caucuses water down the representative role for an MP. They also warned that their existence erodes the independence of Parliament from the executive.

A panel of seven independent judges appointed by the National Debate Council crowned Tumwesigye Jordan a student of Mbarara S.S the best Speaker of the Championship. The theme for this year’s tournament was Civil Liberties: Our Rights and Responsibilities.

TEENS MEDIA GROUP AND THE TARGET GROUP, DEFINED!

TEENS MEDIA GROUP is a media and the performing arts ministry for children and youths established to provide a platform where young people can easily access inspirational teachings, friendly counsel and holistic training to become morally upright, resourceful and contributing members of the society. Founded in December 2010, TEENS MEDIA GROUP is an indigenous voluntary, not for profit initiative whose goal is to intervene and contribute towards raising morally upright, resourceful and productive generation.

We employ innovate and creative approaches in communicating with the young people and implement our programmes through development, production and dissemination of youths friendly media and artistic productions.

Target beneficiaries
Working with schools, communities and institutions where children and youths are gathered, our programmes are designed for pre-teenagers and teenagers in and out of school.

Pre-teenagers
TEENS MEDIA GROUP defines pre-teenagers as children of 8-12 years old. We believe these are children who have not yet started going against rules and values taught by parents, teachers, communities and religions on avoiding risk-behavior. These children, who, in most cases will only be used or abused, are still vulnerable. Our communication resources and other programmes for this group teach life, and growing up as an adventure, with a destiny the child can influence, given the right guidance and making the right choices. The communications equips the pre-teenager with anticipation for changes of growing up, and warns of the danger of not listening to counsel and going against rules. It builds the invaluable preciousness of the family life and positive friendships. It prepares the child to cope with areas of vulnerability and establishes a supportive relationship with the parents, teachers and other responsible adults in the community where the child is growing in case the child needs counseling or referral for other support.

Programmes for teenagers
The resources under this are designed for the youth in Secondary Schools and Colleges and also those out of school and working class singles. It challenges them to discuss objectively, values they have started questioning or those they have abandoned altogether. It gives them a chance to eventually choose the best, the communications focuses on freedom, self-esteem, communication, self actualization, love, sex, romance without regret, family life, AIDS, practical friendships, dating for marriage, and Christianity. It provides a forum for discussing with the youth issues that they identify as major sources of confusion between fun and risk, as far as relationships and growing up are concerned.

GENERATION GAP CAN ONLY BE BRIDGED USING PROPER COMMUNICATION

A number of parents have either given up on their teen agers or are planning to do so just beacause they do not undrestand these teens and rush into blaming them with a common say " CHILDREN OF THESES DAYS" But in TEENS MEDIA we value them as they are and believe they can change when talked to that is why we call upon you to come to us once facing this challeng of bringing up a young person we can help you talk to him or her.

HARNESSING THE POWER OF POPULAR DRAMA-TEENS MEDIA GROUP IS MOBILISING FUNDS TO FINANCE THIS PROJECT-RADIO SOAP/SERIAL DRAMA ON ONE OF THE MOST POPULAR LOCLA FM STATIONS IN LIRA- CALL +254 719 344 764 TO PARTNER WITH US

"Some of the problems facing societies around the world today require a change of attitude and ultimately of behaviour in people within those societies if they are to be surmounted. Issues to do with health and the environment are cases in point. Domestic violence is another. Worldwide the rising incidence of violence in the home and the number of deaths from unsafe water, from alcohol, drugs, smoking and AIDS are evidence of how prevailing attitudes and patterns of behaviour are an obstacle to attempts by experts and educators to persuade people to change.
Raising awareness by giving clear and accurate information about the risks and consequences of certain behaviour is a start but is not enough in itself. The reasons and the underlying emotions which determine why and how people act as they do have to be addressed as well. And this is notoriously difficult to do. Attitudes are deep-seated. Well-established habits die hard.

Used effectively – often in collaboration with specialists and educators - the broadcast media can make a contribution to the development of societies by raising awareness and changing attitudes. And there is perhaps no more effective means for them to do so than the long-running serial drama such as the ‘soap’. It is a form of drama with a proven ability to attract and retain a wide audience; it enables viewers and listeners to identify with characters and situations taken from daily life; and it speaks to them more directly than informative programming because it addresses the underlying motives and emotions that universally determine human attitudes and behaviour. In many parts of the world the ‘soap’ has shown that it can be a powerful means not only to attract and entertain large audiences but also to educate and to engage them on issues of importance to the development of their societies".

IT IS NOT JUST ABOUT ILLUSIONS BUT REALITY

"There is no doubt that Uganda is a conflict country, whether you take it at a macro-level or micro-level. At the macro-level, Uganda has fought many more wars than any other East African country, both civil and interstate wars. Over the years, Uganda has had war with Tanzania, Democratic Republic of Congo, Sudan, and Rwanda. At the micro-level, there are many conflicts at the community level that distort the peaceful aspirations of citizens. Many of these are most probably unknown to us. Therefore when we talk about playing a role in peace building, we are talking about something that is relevant both to the real and contextual condition of our existence".

Background to TEENS MEDIA GROUP

Background Information.
More than 1.5 billion people in the world over are between the ages of 10 and 25(http://www.unfpa.org/adolescents/education.htm#media). This largest-ever generation of adolescents is approaching adulthood in a world their elders could not have imagined. Globalization, the AIDS pandemic, electronic communications and a changing trend in fashions, lifestyle and culture have irrevocably shifted the landscape. The scenario is mixed. As young people share ideas, values, music and symbols through mass media and electronic technology, a global youth culture has emerged. Many young people are organizing and networking themselves in both formal and informal ways. But more than half live in poverty, on less than $2 per day. Often they lack access to the technology and information. Many also face social inequality, poor schools, gender discrimination, unemployment and inadequate health systems.

Young people in Uganda like their peers in other parts of the world are too, faced by these critical issues. The youth are threatened by pandemic diseases like HIV and AIDS as well social evils like drug abuse, prostitution, gambling and many of them have found themselves plunged into economic crisis and insecurity by their condition and struggling without services and support system in impoverished communities. A lot of financial resources both from government and development partners have so far been spent to address these challenges but still the gap is wide and needs more intervention from all parties including the young people themselves. The children and youths do not have a direct platform to raise voices and as a result many have sadly resigned to do nothing. This calls for the need to wake-up the community and involve young people more in the affairs that affect them. Youth involvement and participation is very vital because young people have the right to be involved and to have their voice heard in decisions that affect them. Participation is a fundamental right of all people regardless of age. As far as young people are concerned, the right is enshrined in the United Nations Convention on the rights of the child 1989, Article 12.

Actions and practical involvement of the young people in activities which have tangible results and direct impact in their life other than mere talks and complains with folded arms is an investment with a lucrative return. A friendly information sharing approach makes this more attractive, appealing and relevant!

Teens Media Group (TMG) is therefore a media and public relations agency established by a collaboration of youths working in the media and youths involved in the performing arts industry (theartre Artists, local musicians and sound/audio producers) to provide a platform where young people can easily access friendly communications, inspirational teachings and guidance to become morally upright, resourceful and contributing members of the society. Founded in December 2010 as an indigenous voluntary non profit BUT public benefit initiative, TMG is registered and authorized to operate in Uganda by the national NGO Board under the Non-Governmental Organizations Registration/Incorporation Act, 2006. We implement our programmes through a variety of media and the performing arts production and work with a network of media and young people focused agencies both of indigenous and international origin. The group is also a registered member of Lira Ngo Forum and Young People - Self Coordinating Entity (YP-SCE). Teens Media Group is a smoke, alcohol and violence free environment.

Aims of Teens Media Group
• To create experience, environments and relationships that will enable the young people to thrive and discover their potentials, think creatively and make informed decision.
• To immerse the youths in a culture that values their capability, nurtures their individuality and unleashes their intelligence.

• To build a repository of hope for the disadvantaged youths by putting forward ideas about social justice, human rights and appreciation that everyone is capable of rising and contributing to the betterment of the society.
